What is Living Rivers Europe?
Living Rivers Europe is an alliance of NGOs committed to the defence of freshwater ecosystems and their sustainable management in the EU. This platform was launched in March 2017 in the context of the revision of the EU 2000 Water Framework Directive to accompany this process (#protectwater campaign in 2018) and prevent the WFD from being weakened following its revision.
It is now pursuing its mission to promote the maintenance of the WFD’s ambitions and to support approaches and initiatives to ensure that water resilience, the restoration of aquatic ecosystems and good water quality remain priorities in the EU’s mandates.
Living Rivers Europe continues to support European water policy to :
- A better implementation and enforcement of the Water Framework Directive;
- An effective integration of water management aspects into relevant sectoral policies, particularly agriculture, energy, flood risk management and transport; and
- The maintenance of the Water Framework Directive’s high standards of water resources and ecosystem protection.
