NATALIE and CS#4 at the Sustain Istanbul 2024 Congress

IS

The NATALIE project showcased its pioneering work on groundwater management at the Sustain Istanbul 2024 Congress: Towards Sustainable Groundwater Use under Changing Climate, held from 9-11 October in Istanbul, Turkey. Gathering experts from around the globe, the congress provided a forum for exploring innovative, sustainable approaches to water management in light of mounting climate challenges.

Representing NATALIE, Noelia Cruz Pérez and Joselin Sarai Rodríguez Alcántara from the University of La Laguna (ULL) presented their study titled Sustainable Groundwater Management in the Canary Islands: Implementing Managed Aquifer Recharge and Nature-Based Solutions. This comprehensive presentation explored the unique hydrogeological characteristics of the Canary Islands and the advanced strategies being employed to address water scarcity.

The importance of sustainable groundwater management for island territories like the Canary Islands is undeniable, as climate change, combined with tourism and agriculture demands, continues to increase stress on local resources. By introducing nature-based solutions, these regions can mitigate some of these challenges while preserving biodiversity and adapting to a changing climate. This congress provided an invaluable platform for discussing innovative strategies tailored to the unique requirements of island ecosystems and advancing global groundwater sustainability.

The Sustain Istanbul 2024 Congress provided an invaluable platform for the NATALIE team to share these insights, fostering dialogue with global experts facing similar challenges. This exchange of knowledge will play a key role in advancing sustainable water solutions tailored to the unique conditions of island environments, marking a significant step forward in securing resilient water resources for the future.
